Two urban extension projects with similar goals, but executed in different fashions.
38sqm rear ground floor extension and internal modelling of a detached Victorian property, Kingston.
Contract Value: £115,000
Completed January 2011
The proposals sought to remove a collection of small dark spaces that restricted access and views to the rear garden. The delivered scheme provides a free flowing kitchen and dining space that is lit by a generous roof light. The walls and roof of the extension have been finished in large format copper shingles with careful attention to detailing providing clean lines throughout. The rich copper material will mature and respond to its location over time, complementing the quality and age of the main building. Connection to the garden has been optimised by use of large format corner sliding windows that seamlessly slide away into discrete pockets within the facade of the building blurring the boundaries between inside and out.
35sqm rear ground floor extension of a semi detached Victorian property, Kingston.
Contract Value: £65,000
Completed November 2011
The proposed scheme relocated the existing kitchen from the dark core of the house to its new location overlooking the garden. This reorganising and expansion of the ground floor layout has allowed the family to change the emphasis on how they live and fully engage with the garden. New seating areas are flooded with natural light from above by a large roof light above. Externally the building has been clad in warm horizontal pre-treated timber sections and this detailing has been further continued out to the garden to create sensitive screening to neighbouring properties.
