WEST COMMON
Haywards Heath | West Sussex

FCA were delighted to win a Conservation & Design Award for West Common, presented by Lindfield Preservation Society.

The overall approach delivered and refurbished an historic Turner home; tastefully finished and consistent with the host building. For the main two wings to the extension, traditional materials such as stock bricks and hanging tiles were presented in a contemporary manner against a framed copper horizontal plane under which fully glazed walls created an inward facing arrangement of spaces. The symmetrical gabled wings project towards the rear garden and contain living spaces and an open plan kitchen which wrap around a new west facing external space. The end result is contextual, yet assertive, with traditional materials utilised in a bold massing. Celebrating local distinctiveness and traditional construction details, the scheme matches the size, scale and character of the host home; sharing something of its spirit, solidity and ambience.
